The trouble is you can shut your eyes but you can’t shut your mind.

Terry Pratchett
About This Quote

The trouble is you can shut your eyes but you can’t shut your mind. This is a very popular saying and is used to express how hard it is to stop thinking about something. There are many ways to do this and one of them is by using self-control techniques such as positively affirming that it will stop (such as silently saying, “this will endâ€) or mentally wishing that it would end (such as thinking, “I wish this problem would go awayâ€). Another way of doing this is by giving up on the thought.

Once we give up on a thought or action, we no longer have control over it and we cannot force it to happen. However, if we continue to think about something until we lose interest in it, we will eventually come to accept that the thought just does not work for us and we will move on.
